Cold saponification, what is it?
Saponification is a chemical reaction which takes place between two elements, a fatty substance (the oils and butters constituting soap) and an alkali (lying soda). During this process, the oil and lye will disappear to form soap and glycerin. The chemical reaction only stops when one of the two components is exhausted.
We call superfatted soap a soap resulting from saponification during which it is the soda which is used up first. Cold saponification is a slow method that preserves all the properties of the natural soap ingredients.
What is overgreasing?
Now that you know what saponification is, you will easily understand what superfatting is. This is the proportion of oil which is not saponified and which therefore remains in the oil state in the soap. It is this superfatting that will provide softness and nutrition to the skin. So, no feeling of tightness or dry skin after using the soap.
