Jim Collins and his team of researchers devoted five years to this question, seeking to unlock the secret of transformation towards excellence. They compared eleven companies, selected for their stock market performances well above those of their sector, to their competitors.

Rather than imposing a personal vision, these leaders first recruited the best talent, then encouraged continuous and constructive debate within the company.
What made the difference? The adoption of a simple concept guiding all the company's actions, the inflexible determination of managers to apply it, and a rigorous discipline, first established at the highest level.
